August 21, 1999 Launch Report

Contributed by Tom McAtee

We had another day of great weather for the August 21 launch, with temperatures in the 80's and light winds. Twenty-seven flyers took advantage of the opportunity, putting up 141 flights.

Jim Davis had the first flight of the day, with an interesting-looking scale model of an HPR project. Unfortunately, it arced over under E6 power, separated, and the nose cone was lost. Claude Paquin had another very interesting rocket, a reproduction of an old Estes fantasy model, the Alien Explorer. Ann Tully and Vikki Oxford, joining us for the first time, both flew their first rockets successfully. That crazy guy, Steve Mizerany, launched his Quest Renegade with a D21 for a spectacular flight, and even got it back and did it again. Steve also brought out the infamous Oddball, launching it for an odd flight.

John Buckley made several test flights of a new boost-glide model intended for the September competition. Jack Hollister got a successful flight with his Quark-Quark, a two-stage version of the tiny Estes rocket, but it went into the lake. Dave and Emily Mulawa's D3-powered rocket suffered the same fate. Paul Graf made good flights with his Gemini Titan and his plastic model Graf Zeppelin. However, his scratchbuilt Mars Lander, a copy of the old Estes classic, suffered a faulty chute deployment and crunched its nose. Candice Turner put up numerous flights with her Astrocam, Ninja, and Snitch. Mike Weiner had a couple of good-looking multistagers, a Quest Zenith 2 and Estes Comanche 3, and made good flights with both.
